Avoid These Design Mistakes

When it comes to designing a webpage there a several do’s and don’ts you should be aware of. Here are a few of the things you shouldn’t do, and why.

The first thing you want to avoid is also the most tempting. Never clutter your page with too many advertisements, especially pop ups. They are annoying and the majority of people pays no attention to them and clicks them off instantly. It’s okay to have ad placement here and there, but it’s pretty obvious when you’re more concerned with making money than providing good content or a good design.

Another thing you want to avoid is straying off topic too much. If I go to a site to read a review of a new movie, the last thing I want to see is a review of a new pair of shoes, or an advertisement of some sort for three valleys ski.

In that process of finding content, I never want to experience slow load times. Make sure your site is compatible with most systems. And with the rapid increase of browser users, you want to be compatible with browsers of all types.

Site counters are also another no, no. They are outdated, and no one really cares how many people visit your site on a monthly basic. In fact, if it’s a low amount, it might make visitors assume your site isn’t as good as others and deter them away from it.

And please, oh please, make sure all the links and buttons on your page work. We all hate when we click a link and it takes us nowhere, or the site is no longer available. It’s very important to keep track of these things.

Some more outdated but once popular items include frames, fancy fonts, and wallpapers. If you can abide by these few things, I’m sure your site will rock!
